When you run a company that has a lot of branches, perhaps in far-flung outposts overseas as well as all over the UK, the use of internal communication videos can help to make a lot of difference to your productivity and thus to your bottom line. If you are the CEO, marketing director, production director, financial director, and so on, you need to be able to get your messages across to staff who work far from head office.

Certainly, you may be able to visit your factory in Hong Kong, but you can’t really do that at the drop of a hat or even every other week. You may want to instruct employees to take a certain action – or perhaps not take a certain action – and of course, you can send them an email. However, it is not the same thing as being there in person, and with internal videos, you can near enough do that. Slamm Productions can produce a video of you explaining what it is that you want your employees to do and you can then load it on to your website or on to YouTube so that your staff can see you and listen to you.

There are lots of other ways that you can use internal communications videos. For example, you may just have bought a new factory in Australia and you would like to be able to show all your staff, wherever they are, around the factory. Using a video, you can give a guided tour with yourself as a voice-over, or we can provide a voice-over actor for you. And yes, if you want us to fly to Australia to produce the video, we will happily undertake that.

You might want all your employees worldwide to be able to see a new product that has just been built at one of your factories. Yes, you can take photos of it, but how much better it will be if your employees can actually see that product in action doing whatever it does.

Perhaps you have just taken a new director on board and you would like to introduce him to everybody. We can make a video of him explaining who he is, what he has done in the past, and how glad he is to have joined you, and the things he intends to do going forward.

More and more businesses today are turning to corporate video production in order to promote their goods and services. We are living in the digital age, and people no longer want to read about products and services from a catalogue. They simply want to go online and learn about it, not just read about it. In fact, only in the last week or two, in reports of the downturn in the High Street, one of the shops closing most often was the bookshop.

Let’s face it, why read about something if you can see it in action on a video? Suppose I want to buy a strimmer. Sure, I can read an ad in a newspaper and see a photo of it, I can send away for a catalogue, or I can click on a website and see the strimmer in action. I can see how well it cuts away long grass. I can see how it can get into a small area behind a tree or whatever.

The demonstrator can show me how easy it is to clean using a strimmer or change a part if needed. I can watch it all with my own eyes, and you certainly can’t get all that from a catalogue.

There are so many different things that you can do with video as well. For example, you can have an animated video with comic characters if appropriate. Perhaps you want to show how fast your electrical bicycle can go so you can have animated characters riding it and have the film speeded up to give the extra impression of speed. Viewers will know that the speed is excessive, and yet you convey the right impression.

You can also use video for internal communication in a business. When you have offices or factories spread far and wide, whether it is up and down the UK or overseas as well, It is not possible for your senior management to visit them all very often. Many people just send emails or possibly a PDF when they want to explain something new that the company is doing, or issue instructions about something.

How much better it is to appear on a video talking to your staff in far-flung locations. Some of those staff may never have seen the CEO or even a photo, but with a video, you can talk to them as if you were in the same room. This creates a much greater sense of belonging to an organisation than just being on the receiving end of emails.

What about aerial video? It is always impressive because people do not see a lot of aerial shots for the simple reason that until today it has been horrifically expensive. The only way was to hire a helicopter – starting at around £2,000 per hour!

However, as a corporate video production company, we have our own drones and a qualified pilot who is authorised to fly by the CAA. We are also fully insured. There are so many ways that you can use aerial shots. For example, if you are a builder and are just completing a housing estate, you might want to show aerial shots to show its’ position in relation to the nearest town, or how quiet and peaceful it is out in the countryside. You could show potential members around your golf course with a running commentary about each hole. There are lots of things that you can do with aerial video.

Oh yes, you can! Not very many years ago, if you wanted to shoot an aerial video for whatever purpose, be it to demonstrate a product, show a view of a building or an estate, or for any other purpose, there was only one way to do it. Hire a helicopter or another light aircraft and shoot the video from that.

Of course, that could be horrifically expensive. Suppose you want to charter a helicopter for a 30-minute flight over London to go sightseeing? An AS350 which seats six is quoted as “from” £1,950. If you are going to be shooting an aerial film, you might need it for a couple of hours at least!!

However, today at Slamm Productions we have our own “helicopters”. They are called UAVs – Unmanned Aerial Vehicles – otherwise known as drones, and they are a lot cheaper than a helicopter!

Our latest UAV’s are extremely stable, even when the wind is gusting, and provide a very stable platform to shoot film from. We can shoot aerial videos, aerial stills, and aerial 360° panoramas. These UAVs can fly fast, track subjects, and perform a host of other functions.

Of course, not just anyone can fly a drone. You have to have a trained pilot who knows how to fly the drone to get the best shots. He also has to be fully insured and be certified by the CAA. It is illegal to fly a drone for paid work unless he is. Fortunately, at Slamm Productions we have such a pilot. He flies our DJI Inspire in areas where there is plenty of room, and we shoot in 4K. For aerial video production in more confined areas, or even indoors, we use a much smaller Mavic Air which also shoots in 4K. We also know how to check areas for suitability and how to get permission to fly in restricted areas more often than not.

Using some aerial shots in your ground-based video can give that “big-budget” feel to your production and impress your viewers beyond measure. Today, we are in the 21st century and it is very much the digital age. People expect to be able to go online and look at locations, products or services. They want to see products from every angle and see believable tours of locations before they buy  They don’t want to see half a dozen photos if they can watch a video of a holiday destination on the companies website YouTube channel.

A video is so much more believable than just words or even a still photograph. It provides much more detail. For instance, you can show a photo of your hotel front on your website, and perhaps a photo of the garden. We know that video sells because we are inundated with ads on the television. That magazine is going to get thrown away in a week, anyway, and if people have no interest in your product, they can simply turn the page. On television, it is a different matter because they have to sit and watch it before the program continues.

True they don’t have to watch a video on your website or YouTube, but video generates interest. People want to know what happens next: it sparks their curiosity because with corporate video production there is more to come.
